A labyrinth is an ancient and cross-cultural spiritual tool. For more than 4,000 years, monastics and lay people alike, from cultures spanning almost every continent, have used labyrinths to foster contemplation and spiritual awareness.

In modern parlance, we use the word “labyrinth” to refer to a structure that is complex and confusing, like a maze. But a contemplative labyrinth is not a maze. Mazes are designed to be disorienting, to leading you down blind alleys and toward unforeseen dead ends. A labyrinth is a singular path that leads to the center. Labyrinths are designed to lead to discernment and deep wisdom.

Christian monks at the Chartres Cathedral in France first adopted the labyrinth for Christian prayer at the beginning of the 13th century. The cyclic nature of the labyrinth helped them to contemplate the Christ-mystery of life, death, and resurrection. Walking the singular path, they knew they would always find their way to Christ, the center of their faith.

Join us in walking this ancient path.
