Even though our building may look imposing, we hope you will find our congregation to be warm and welcoming. Our Sunday morning worship service follows a typical Protestant format, including hymns, music, scripture readings, a sermon, an offering, prayers and meditation. Our worship time together is deep, lively, varied, and intergenerational. It is the hour when the whole life of our congregation comes together in song, dialogue, prayer and praise to celebrate our work, our mission, our growth, our spirituality and our faith. We are a Christ-centered, open-minded, dedicated congregation that enjoys being together and growing in faith and understanding. Newcomers and visitors are always welcome.
First United Methodist Church of Pittsburgh is welcoming, healing, serious about forgiveness – a safe sanctuary for many.
~ Our church nurtures creativity, talents, and gifts. People are encouraged to try new things.
~ We love and value children and all that they contribute to our congregation.
~ We “walk the talk” of the mission statement–the congregation is not separated from events of the world, and social justice issues of many sorts.
~ As a congregation we encourage seeking a relationship with God–we are not dogmatic or judgmental about this process.
Our congregation is diverse and we cherish our diversity–including students, those visiting Pittsburgh, those new to the city, and those who have felt unwelcome at other churches. We include about 400 members from all walks of life. The traditional service on Sunday morning typically has an attendance of 130-150 persons.
We value full inclusion. Our members span all age groups and include all income and educational levels. We are a vibrant congregation made up of singles, families with young children, students, great-grandparents, African Americans and Asians from various countries, and members of the LGBTQ community.
