First Church Notes: 08.04.2019

Come and join your First Church family for a potluck picnic after worship on Sunday, August 11!  We will be in Fellowship Hall if very hot or rainy, and also in the courtyard under tents for shade.  Peki and Nua have graciously agreed, once again, to bring their big grill, so we need some helpers to flip hamburgers and hot dogs. The meat, buns, and drinks will be provided by the Hospitality Team. If you are able and willing to bring a dish, we are suggesting:

·         Vegetable or starch (potato/rice) item if your last name begins with

·         A through M.

·         Salad, fruit, or dessert if your last name begins with N through Z

We are looking for volunteers to plan games and activities for our children of all ages. If you are willing to do this, email or talk with Karen Jacobs ( or Karen Merrick (  And as always, we are looking for volunteers to clean up after the picnic.  Please consider helping in this way. Hope to see you there!      Hospitality Team

We need a host for Sunday, August 18. The popcorn and lemonade will be provided. The host would be responsible for making the lemonade, organizing the snack display and cleaning up after fellowship time. To volunteer please see Karen Jacobs or email her at

August is First Church’s month to volunteer at First Food & Friends, our weekly – every Saturday – meal ministry to anyone in need. (First Church has made a commitment to staff a volunteer team the last Saturday of every other month).

Please consider volunteering to be part of this ministry on Saturday, August 24th.  Usually we help the last week but as there are five Saturdays in August and the last one is Labor Day weekend, this date seemed best.  Come to Fellowship Hall at 9:00am.  Clean-up is done by 1:00pm.

Please email Karen Merrick at, by August 19th, if you are able to be there.  Any questions, please talk with Karen, Dave Keller or Fred Watts.

Thanks for considering being a part of this very important outreach ministry of First Church!

Kids, teens, and families are invited to join us for s’mores, hotdogs, fun, and fellowship. Sunday August 25, 6:00-9:00 pm in the church courtyard. Please RSVP to Joe @ 304-731-8717 or

You are invited to a bulletin board journey that begins and ends right outside the Fellowship Hall door.  This is a backwards journey taking you from plastics to where it all begins with fossil fuel. We invite you to take a few minutes to read what our colorfully clothed little board people have to say. They are worried about our climate crisis. Then join us on Tuesday, September 3 at 7:30 in the evening to learn more about why plastics keep us connected to fossil fuels. Then we can share ideas of what we can do and what this has to do with church.

We’re looking for people to join our children’s and youth ministry teams. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved, from teaching a Sunday School class to chaperoning social gatherings, providing meals, or just hanging out and getting to know some really cool kids. No experience or special skills required, just a love for kids. If you’d like to learn more, please talk to Joe. If you don’t catch him in the hallways, you can contact him at 304-731-8717 or

MYSTICS IN MOTION: For mystic explorers, cosmic thinkers, and lovers of creation.  Wednesdays 7-8:30pm

If you are a spiritually inquisitive, active, social, and creative person who wants to explore the connection between your soul and the sacredness of all creation, we invite you to join our Wednesday evening community, Mystics in Motion. We are cosmic thinkers and lovers of creation who want to grow in spiritual wisdom through conversations of consequence, meditation, movement, and the creative arts so that we might serve the common good and restore a healthy relationship to our planet.

We have been inspired by Matthew Fox and his two young co-authors in Order of the Sacred Earth to consider taking a vow “to be the best lover and defender of mother earth that we can be,” a vow we hope to make on retreat this September. Conversations about taking vows for The Order of the Sacred Earth happen mostly on the first Wednesday of the month. You are welcome to join us.

We have changed our name from Worship Jam to Mystics in Motion to better reflect the active, mystical community we have become
