First Church Notes: 06.30.2019

Do you have questions about FAMILY PROMISE?  Are you thinking of volunteering?  Just want to know more?  We have lots of exciting plans for this ministry.

Today, June 30, following the worship service we will have a Lunch and Learn with the Executive Director of Family Promise of South Western PA, Laura Vincenti.  She will be here to answer any questions or concerns you may have.  At that time we hope that many of you will be ready to make a commitment to participate in this ministry.  Please email or text Glenna Wilson that you plan to attend:  glennapw@gmail.com or 412.519.5062

UMC OPEN STREETS PITTSBURGH

United Methodists of the Pittsburgh District are sponsoring a table at Open Streets Pittsburgh Sunday 7/28, 9am-1pm – www.openstreetspgh.org

We will be providing a positive public presence by inviting Open Streets participants to pack Blessing Bags and take one to share with someone in need. We have signed up to collect 500 chap sticks for these blessing bags. These should be collected by

Sunday, July 14th

Visit our Tent (location TBA), pack a Blessing Bag, and share with someone in need! Blessing bags contain items frequently needed by someone who is unhoused, along with information about community resources. Keep one in your car to be a blessing to someone in need!

YOUTH MISSION U

Youth Mission U is a mission camp for youth in grades 6-12. Youth will participate in a variety of hands-on mission projects, including building ramps to make homes accessible and helping with summer feeding programs for children. They’ll learn together: the study focus for Youth Mission U this year is What About Our Money?

They’ll experience innovative intergenerational worship. And they’ll have fun! High school juniors and seniors will also have the option to assist with the Children’s Mission U school or do childcare. Both camps are held at California University of Pennsylvania, July 16th – 21st.

Register at https://www.wpaumc.org/youthmissionu. For more information, or to enquire about scholarships, contact Joe Smith, Director of Spiritual Formation @ 304-731-8717 or joe@fumcpittsburgh.org.

DO YOU HAVE A PASSION FOR WORKING WITH KIDS OR TEENAGERS?

We’re looking for people to join our children’s and youth ministry teams. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved, from teaching a Sunday School class to chaperoning social gatherings, providing meals, or just hanging out and getting to know some really cool kids. No experience or special skills required, just a love for kids. If you’d like to learn more, please talk to Joe. If you don’t catch him in the hallways, you can contact him at 304-731-8717 or joe@fumcpittsburgh.org

HAVE YOU GRADUATED OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS?

We are seeking to know about those of us in our FUMC community who have graduated from high school, college, or technical school of some sort. We are planning to celebrate graduates in worship and to present them with a gift from the church. Please contact the church office at 412-450-8532 or office@fumcpittsburgh.org to let us know.

MYSTICS IN MOTION: For mystic explorers, cosmic thinkers, and lovers of creation.  Wednesdays 7-8:30pm

If you are a spiritually inquisitive, active, social, and creative person who wants to explore the connection between your soul and the sacredness of all creation, we invite you to join our Wednesday evening community, Mystics in Motion. We are cosmic thinkers and lovers of creation who want to grow in spiritual wisdom through conversations of consequence, meditation, movement, and the creative arts so that we might serve the common good and restore a healthy relationship to our planet.

We have been inspired by Matthew Fox and his two young co-authors in Order of the Sacred Earth to consider taking a vow “to be the best lover and defender of mother earth that we can be,” a vow we hope to make on retreat this September. Conversations about taking vows for The Order of the Sacred Earth happen mostly on the first Wednesday of the month. You are welcome to join us.

We have changed our name from Worship Jam to Mystics in Motion to better reflect the active, mystical community we have become.
