ECO-THEOLOGY BOOK DISCUSSION
Join us this summer for a discussion of The Body of God: An Ecological Theology.
Award-winning theologian Sallie McFague here develops a striking and novel vision of the universe, one that takes seriously and radically both contemporary science and the incarnational commitments of the Christian tradition.
The group will meet every other Wednesday, beginning June 12th, 5:30-7:00 pm, in the Gathering Space. You can pick up a copy of the book here: https://www.amazon.com/Body-God-Ecological-Theology/dp/0800627350; or, if you would like the church to purchase the book for you, contact Joe at email@example.com or 304-731-8717.
INTERESTED IN MEMBERSHIP AT FIRST CHURCH?
If you are thinking you might like to become a member of First Church, join us for an “exploration/orientation” luncheon on Sunday, June 23rd immediately after worship. This will be a time to get information and ask questions about our church from Pastor Tracy and other members of our different Ministry Teams.
Please let Pastor Tracy know of your interest by emailing her at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling the church office at 412-450-8532.
New members will join the church on Sunday, June 30th.
YOUTH MISSION U is a mission camp for youth in grades 6-12.
Youth will participate in a variety of hands-on mission projects, including building ramps to make homes accessible and helping with summer feeding programs for children. They’ll learn together: the study focus for Youth Mission U this year is What About Our Money? They’ll experience innovative intergenerational worship. And they’ll and have fun! High school juniors and seniors will also have the option to assist with the Children’s Mission U school or do childcare. Both camps are held at California University of Pennsylvania, July 16th – 21st. Register at https://www.wpaumc.org/youthmissionu. For more information, or to enquire about scholarships, contact Joe Smith, Director of Spiritual Formation @ 304-731-8717 or email@example.com.
HAVE YOU GRADUATED OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS?
We are seeking to know about those of us in our FUMC community who have graduated from high school, college, or technical school of some sort. We are planning to celebrate graduates in worship and to present them with a gift from the church. Please contact the church office at 412-450-8532 or firstname.lastname@example.org to let us know.
OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT ALEXA AUREDNIK as she travels to Arusha, Tanzania on a short term medical mission trip.
Alexa is asking for our prayer support and financial support.
“I will be volunteering at various hospitals and clinics in Arusha, Tanzania this summer through the company IVHQ.
They decide my placement of which hospitals and clinics I will work at based on the community needs, and my skills as nursing student.
Any monies raised will help pay for my flights, the program fees, and permits I will need to obtain to stay in the country.”
You can donate through the below link — or get in touch with Alexa, proud Grandfather, Dick Miller, or Pastor Tracy to donate.
Here are links to fundraising pages that also has some information on the trip.
NEW PROJECT FOR FUMC:
At a recent Leadership Council meeting The Poverty Team of FUMC was approved to begin the process of becoming a host church for FAMILY PROMISE OF SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA.
This program connects homeless children and their families with a network of local congregations and the community, all focused on providing them with shelter, meals, hospitality, and support until they are able to return to sustainable independent lives in their own homes.
This would only involve hosting families overnight one week at a time for 3-4 times per year. We would host 3-4 families. It does involve a significant number of volunteers during that week. However, we will also be seeking volunteers and partners from other congregations and organizations in our surrounding community. We would be the first host church in the Eastern side of the county.
See the bulletin insert for the kinds of tasks volunteers would provide. Please review this, pray about it, and check off if you are interested in participating. This is not a definite commitment, but a gauge for us to see if we have enough congregational support to do this project.
For more information you can check their website: https://familypromiseswpa.org/
The Poverty Team has compiled a list of ongoing needs for First Food and Friends and the Caring Cupboard. Please consider supporting these ministries by bringing in any of the following items:
FIRST FOOD & FRIENDS:
• New Women’s Bras, Panties (Larger sizes)
• New Men’s Boxers (Med, LG, XL)
• Sweatshirts, all sizes
As always new socks are greatly appreciated.
MYSTICS IN MOTION: For mystic explorers, cosmic thinkers, and lovers of creation. Wednesdays 7-8:30pm
If you are a spiritually inquisitive, active, social, and creative person who wants to explore the connection between your soul and the sacredness of all creation, we invite you to join our Wednesday evening community, Mystics in Motion. We are cosmic thinkers and lovers of creation who want to grow in spiritual wisdom through conversations of consequence, meditation, movement, and the creative arts so that we might serve the common good and restore a healthy relationship to our planet.
We have been inspired by Matthew Fox and his two young co-authors in Order of the Sacred Earth to consider taking a vow “to be the best lover and defender of mother earth that we can be,” a vow we hope to make on retreat this September. Conversations about taking vows for The Order of the Sacred Earth happen mostly on the first Wednesday of the month. You are welcome to join us.
We have changed our name from Worship Jam to Mystics in Motion to better reflect the active, mystical community we have become.
