First Church Notes: 05.12.2019

FELLOWSHIP HOST VOLUNTEERS are needed during the summer months.    If you can host any Sunday beginning May 26, please let Karen Jacobs know at ballroombuddies@verizon.net.    Thank you.

HAVE YOU GRADUATED OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS?

We are seeking to know about those of us in our FUMC community who have graduated from high school, college, or technical school of some sort. We are planning to celebrate graduates in worship and to present them with a gift from the church. Please contact the church office at 412-450-8532 or office@fumcpittsburgh.org to let us know.

SEEKERS CLASS

May 12-May 19 – How does our relationship to God relate to our ethical lives? Do we need God to be good? Does God command what is right; or is something right because God commands it? How do we make sense of biblical commands that seem irrational or immoral? We will take up these and other questions in a series titled God and the Good, facilitated by our new Director of Spiritual Formation, Joe Smith.

OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT ALEXA AUREDNIK as she travels to Arusha, Tanzania on a short term medical mission trip. Alexa is asking for our prayer support and financial support.

“I will be volunteering at various hospitals and clinics in Arusha, Tanzania this summer through the company IVHQ.

They decide my placement of which hospitals and clinics I will work at based on the community need’s, and my skills as nursing student.

Any monies raised will help pay for my flights, the program fees, and permits I will need to obtain to stay in the country.”

— Alexa

You can donate through the below link — or get in touch with Alexa, proud Grandfather, Dick Miller, or Pastor Tracy to donate.

Here are links to fundraising pages that also has some information on the trip.

NEW PROJECT FOR FUMC:

At a recent Leadership Council meeting The Poverty Team of FUMC was approved to begin the process of becoming a host church for FAMILY PROMISE OF SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA.

This program connects homeless children and their families with a network of local congregations and the community, all focused on providing them with shelter, meals, hospitality, and support until they are able to return to sustainable independent lives in their own homes.

This would only involve hosting families overnight one week at a time for 3-4 times per year. We would host 3-4 families. It does involve a significant number of volunteers during that week.  However, we will also be seeking volunteers and partners from other congregations and organizations in our surrounding community.  We would be the first host church in the Eastern side of the county.

See the bulletin insert for the kinds of tasks volunteers would provide.  Please review this, pray about it, and check off if you are interested in participating.  This is not a definite commitment, but a gauge for us to see if we have enough congregational support to do this project.

For more information you can check their website:  https://familypromiseswpa.org/

The All Church Dinner in May will be a “covered dish” dinner and a celebration of Millie Platt’s 90th birthday!  Meat and rolls will be provided by the Hospitality Team.  We are asking the congregation to contribute a dish to share for this dinner.  Meal will be served at 12:30pm.  No cost, just bring your favorite “covered dish”!

If you are able and willing to bring a dish, we are suggesting a:

MYSTICS IN MOTION: For mystic explorers, cosmic thinkers, and lovers of creation.  Wednesdays 7-8:30pm

If you are a spiritually inquisitive, active, social, and creative person who wants to explore the connection between your soul and the sacredness of all creation, we invite you to join our Wednesday evening community, Mystics in Motion. We are cosmic thinkers and lovers of creation who want to grow in spiritual wisdom through conversations of consequence, meditation, movement, and the creative arts so that we might serve the common good and restore a healthy relationship to our planet.

We have been inspired by Matthew Fox and his two young co-authors in Order of the Sacred Earth to consider taking a vow “to be the best lover and defender of mother earth that we can be,” a vow we hope to make on retreat this September. Conversations about taking vows for The Order of the Sacred Earth happen mostly on the first Wednesday of the month. You are welcome to join us.

We have changed our name from Worship Jam to Mystics in Motion to better reflect the active, mystical community we have become.

SPRC will meet on May 15.  This will be the last meeting until fall.
