SEEKERS CLASS

This Sunday April 7 Renee Petersen will share with us her experience in Selma this winter.  She will be talking about her trip to Alabama with Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network (PIIN). The trip was a pilgrimage to retrace the steps of the hundreds of people who sacrificed their lives to fight for their civil rights. Traveling to the Civil Rights Memorial Center, the Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and attending mass meetings she connected back to her roots to learn where and how the war against injustice truly started. She will be sharing pictures, her thoughts, and her ideas on how our community can further join and support the fight for civil rights.

April 14 We will share readings and thoughts on Easter.  Illa Jean Boggs will offer some Easter odes.

April 21- No class.  Come to the Easter breakfast.

GUN SAFETY

FUMC has joined with Rodef Shalom in their Gun Safety Campaign. The mission of the Gun Safety campaign is to lobby legislators to enact legislation to protect citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  Persons (18 or older) who are in agreement with this campaign are asked to sign postcards with name, date and zip code, that will be forwarded to legislators encouraging them to create reasonable gun safety laws.  The requested enactments include:

·         Universal background check and waiting period to purchase firearms

·         Required training of owners and registration of firearms

·         Restrict ammunition purchase

·         Require reporting of lost or stolen firearms

·         Ban assault weapons

Postcards are available this Sunday at the doors and in the Gathering Space during Fellowship Time.  Only one card per person needs to be signed.  Signed cards can be returned to the office or given to Jeff Miller following worship.

ECO-MINISTRY

New Stewardship Project: Our church’s use of natural gas creates substantial carbon emissions. The electricity we use comes from non-renewable sources. We want to show our stewardship of the planet through two projects: Carbon Offset (CO) and RECs (Renewable Energy Credits). These projects are complementary to our on-going efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.

CO is a way to support carbon-reducing activities such as planting trees, capturing methane from landfills, or supporting new wind farms. RECs support the market for renewable energy generation. The Eco-Ministry Team is going to launch an initiative (REC-CO).  Our goal is to raise $3,500 for both purposes this year. After church today, Stefan will be available in the Gathering Space with information on REC-CO, as well as on ways to calculate our individual carbon footprint, so please stop by.

Keeping with our focus on climate change, at our next meeting on Tuesday May 7 we will show the National Geographic documentary From Paris to Pittsburgh. More details coming soon.

MYSTICS IN MOTION: For mystic explorers, cosmic thinkers, and lovers of creation.  Wednesdays 7-8:30pm

If you are a spiritually inquisitive, active, social, and creative person who wants to explore the connection between your soul and the sacredness of all creation, we invite you to join our Wednesday evening community, Mystics in Motion. We are cosmic thinkers and lovers of creation who want to grow in spiritual wisdom through conversations of consequence, meditation, movement, and the creative arts so that we might serve the common good and restore a healthy relationship to our planet.

We have been inspired by Matthew Fox and his two young co-authors in Order of the Sacred Earth to consider taking a vow “to be the best lover and defender of mother earth that we can be,” a vow we hope to make on retreat this September. Conversations about taking vows for The Order of the Sacred Earth happen mostly on the first Wednesday of the month. You are welcome to join us.

We have changed our name from Worship Jam to Mystics in Motion to better reflect the active, mystical community we have become.

SPRC meets the 2nd Wed of each month.
