SPIRIT OF JUSTICE MUSEUM VISIT

The Spirit of Justice class will be visiting the “Cry, Baby” exhibit at the Warhol museum on February 17, after the all-church Chinese dinner. This exhibit, which features works by Devan Shimoyama, is described in part as “[challenging] cliché with daring and personal representations of the complexities of race and sexuality.” All are invited to join, whether or not you’re a part of the Spirit of Justice class. More information is available on the Warhol museum’s website, and if you have any questions, contact Sam Procter at
sam.procter@gmail.com

PARSONAGE TASK FORCE UPDATE

As previously shared, the Parsonage Task Force has been working to sell the now empty parsonage on Bucknell Street in Point Breeze.  After receiving approval from both the District Board on Church Location and Building and the Charge Conference (held on December 13) the property was listed for sale on January 25.  The Task Force is happy to report that an offer has been accepted.  The sale is expected to close on February 22.  The Task Force is coordinating with the Finance Committee to arrange for the investment of the net sales proceeds.  Should you have questions, please be in touch with the task force chair, Michele Cesare Jury, at mcjury@gmail.com or 412-421-7317.

FIRST CHURCH VOLUNTEER TEAM FOR FIRST FOOD & FRIENDS

February is First Church’s month to volunteer at First Food & Friends, our weekly – every Saturday – meal ministry to anyone in need. (First Church has made a commitment to staff a volunteer team the fourth or fifth Saturday of every other month).

Please consider volunteering to be part of this ministry on Saturday, February 23rd.  Come to Fellowship Hall at 9:00am.  Clean-up is done by 1:00pm.

Please email Karen Merrick at crimmerr@aol.com, by Monday, February 18th, if you are able to be there.  Any questions, please talk with Karen, Dave Keller or Fred Watts.

Thanks for considering being a part of this very important outreach ministry of First Church!

LUNCH AND LEARN INVITATION

You are invited to a Lunch and Learn on February 24 to reflect on the statement that Claudia and Stefan read in church on January 13th.

The purpose of this text/statement is to start a conversation on how to encourage ourselves as individuals and as a congregation to speak forcefully in opposition to hateful and oppressive words. We strongly feel that it is time to hold ourselves as well as our political leadership accountable for the consequences of divisive and degrading language toward others. The Lunch and Learn is intended to begin a process of reflection and discernment to that end. We hope to address questions such as whether this is mainly an individual challenge to each of us or whether we can find language to speak as a congregation, joining other Methodist Church congregations who have similar concerns.

We hope you will join us for this important conversation.

Also, please let Gwen know if you are attending, so we can have adequate provisions.

WRESTLING WITH RACISM

When They Call You a Terrorist – The Wrestling with Racism Team would like to encourage anyone who is interested in discussing the amazing book When They Call You a Terroristto join us for energetic conversation-filled sessions. The authors, Patrisse Khan-Cullors and Asha Bandele, are two of the co-founders of the Black Lives Matter movement. This four session study has been scheduled for 6 pm on March 11th and March 25th, April 8th and April 29th at Warren United Methodist Church. Please order your own copy of the book. If you have any questions regarding the study, please contact Sam Procter or Tracy Merrick.

In addition, the Wrestling with Racism meeting at FUMC on March 4th is canceled.

SPRC meets the 2nd Wed of each month.

MYSTICS IN MOTION: LET EVERYTHING YOU ARE PRAISE GOD!

WEDNESDAYS 7pm

Worship Jam has changed its name! To align more deeply with our experiences on Wednesday evenings, we are now called “Mystics in Motion.” Our experience involves your whole self in worship. Each week, we take a verse or two from the lectionary readings of the week and explore it through interactive, multi-sensory, and playful ways. Mystics in Motion is a community that seeks and celebrates the spiritual essence of life through earth-based traditions, Christian mysticism, and scientific revelation. Please join us any Wednesday at 7pm in the chapel.
