Faith Formation for All Ages at First United Methodist Church

Our congregational life is intergenerational. We welcome each person at her or his age and stage in life and grow in faith together. Seasonal themes are explored throughout our worship and educational life with activities for each age level. For example, hand held puppets in our Palm Sunday procession ranged from paper leaves with googly eyes glued on them to highly intricate imaginary animals who might have wanted to carry Jesus into Jerusalem. And when our adults were studying faith and ecology with members of our congregation who are professors in the field, our children were following the migration of the endangered Whooping Crane and raising money for their support.

Children are not only loved at First UMC, but are also respected. We offer full and affirming children’s classes. But we also learn from our children. They offer wisdom during the Family Time (children’s sermon). They raise funds for causes that matter to them. They collect items for our mission offering. They pass out flowers on Mothers Day. They raise awareness about ecological issues. They sing, dance, parade, puppet, and otherwise inspire us during worship. In December, they offer a Christmas pageant, tailored to their talents, in honor of the Christ child.
